Ecology

In small to large colonies in grassland and open woodland; 1000-4100 ID at lower altitudes in the north of its range, but to 4100 m in the Himalayas and SE. China. Flowering in late May to July.

General Description

A terrestrial herb 10-38 cm tall, often forming loose clumps; stem 1.5-10 cm long, pubescent, hollow below the leaves; rhizomes slender, long, creeping, the internodes usually more than 5 mmlong. Leaves two, subopposite or up to 2 cm apart, lanceolate to ovate, acute to acuminate, 4.5-12.5 cm long, 2.5-5.5 cm wide, lacking a sheathing base, usually drying black, glabrous above, more or less pubescent on the veins beneath, subtended by two tubular sheathes. Inflorescence one-flowered; peduncle 7-13 cm long, densely glandular and pubescent; bract ovate, acute to acuminate, 1.5-3.5 cm long, ciliate. Flower white spotted with purple or brown; pedicel and ovary 0.6--1.8 cm long, glandular-pubes.. cent Dorsal sepal ovate-elliptic, acute or shortly acuminate, 1.7-2.5 cm long, 1.4 cm wide; synsepal narrowly elliptic, bifid and acute at apex, 1.1-1.5 cm long, 0.5-0.6 cm wide. Petals spreading, ligulate to subpandurate or spathulate, rounded at apex, 1.3-2 cm long, 0.50.8 cm wide. Lip pitcher-shaped with a broad mouth, 1.4-2.2 cm long, 1-1.3 cm across, the incurved sides subquadrate. Column 0.50.7 cm long; staminode ovate, retuse, with upcurved sides, 0.5-0.6 cm long, 0.4-0.5 cm wide.

Biology

Flowering in late May to July.

W. North America, E. Europe across to Siberia and Sakhalin, Korea, China, S. Xizang (Tibet), Bhutan.
