General Description

A terrestrial herb with an erect, sparsely or somewhat pubescent leafy stem, 15-40 cm tall, base of stem covered by three to four tubular sheaths, occasionally forming large clumps; rhizome short, stout. Leaves three to five, elliptic-ovate or ellipticlanceolate, acuminate, largest 10-14 cm long, 4-6.5 cm wide, shortly ciliate on margins, usually hairy on veins above and below, sometimes glabrous above. Inflorescence one-flowered; bract longer than the flower, leaf-like, lanceolate, acuminate, 7-14 cm long, 3-5.5 cm wide, ciliate, hairy on veins above and below. Flower purple or pink with darker veins especially on the sepals and petals, rarely white or creamy white; pedicel and ovary 3-4.5 cm long, glabrous. Dorsal sepal elliptic-ovate, acute or apiculate, 3.2-5.3 cm long, 2-3.4 cm wide. Synsepal elliptic-ovate, bifid at acute apex, 2.8-4 cm long, 1.4-2 cm wide. Petals curving forwards either side of the lip, lanceolate, acuminate, untwisted, 3.8-5.7 cm long, 1-2.1 cm wide. Lip deeply saccate, subglobose to subellipsoid, with a pinched margined small mouth, 3-5.5 cm long. Column short; staminode sessile, trullate to oblong-trullate, blunt, not keeled beneath, 10-12 mm long, 7-8 mm wide.

Ecology

In meadows, scrub and forest in damp places and in light shade, often on slopes and banks; sea level to 2400 m.
