Distribution

China (SE. Xizang (Tibet) and W. Yunnan only).

Ecology

Growing on steep grassy limestone cliffs in the shade of dense forest trees in temperate rain forest; 2500-3500 m. Flowering in June and July.

General Description

A terrestrial plant with a long creeping rhizome, 7 cm or more long. Stems erect slender, pubescent, to 9 cm long. Leaves three or rarely four, elliptic-ovate, acute to somewhat acuminate, 4.5-10 cm long, 2.2-3.5 cm wide, sheathing at the base, hairy above and below, especially on the veins, ciliate. Inflorescence one-flowered; peduncle slender, pubescent; bract foliaceous, ovate-lanceolate, acute, 2-3 cm long, pubescent and ciliate. Flower small, globular, fragrant, creamy white with purple spots on inside of lip and around its rim on the outside; pedicel and ovary 1-1.3 cm long, densely reddish pubescent. Dorsal sepal ovate, obtuse or shortly apiculate, 1.2-1.7 cm long, 0.7-1 cm wide; synsepal elliptic-ovate, shortly bifid and apiculate, 1-1.6 cm long, 0.7-1 cm wide. Petals oblong- ovate, obtuse to rounded at apex, 1-1.3 cm long, 0.5-0.7 cm wide. Lip subglobose, 1.3-1.6 cm long. Column 4 mm long, clearly stalked; staminode 0.15 cm long.
