General Description

A slender terrestrial herb 20-37 cm tall, with a short rhizome. Stems leafy, erect, glabrous or sparsely pubescent. Leaves five to six, the lowermost two to three sheathing stem, the uppermost three to four lanceolate to ovate-elliptic, acuminate, conduplicatewhen young, 6-14 cm long, 1-4.1 cm wide, ciliate, pubescent on lower surface particularly on the veins, sparsely pubescent on the upper surface. Inflorescence one-flowered; peduncle sparsely pubescent below the bract; bract overtopping the flower, lanceolate to elliptic, acute or acuminate, 3.7-7 cm long, 1.7-3 cm wide, ciliate and pubescent. Flower similar to that of C. macranthos but relatively smaller, off-white, pink, or red-purple with darker veins, drying brown; staminode usually off-white with a central purple stripe; pedicel and ovary 1.5-4 cm long, glabrous or slightly pubescent towards the apex. Dorsal sepal ovate-elliptic, acute or acuminate, 2.3-3.2 cm long, 1.6--.7 cm wide. Synsepal half to threefifths the width of the dorsal sepal, lanceolate, bifid at the tip, 2-3.4 cm long, 0.8-1.2 cm wide. Petals lanceolate acute or acuminate, slighdy twisted, 3-3.9 cm long, 0.7-0.8 cm wide, glabrous. Lip ellipsoidal, with a small elliptic mouth with an obscure pinched margin, 2.2-3.5 cm long. Column short; staminode elliptic, cordate at base, 6-7 mm long and wide.

Distribution

China (Yunnan, W. Sichuan, SE. Xizang (Tibet).

Ecology

Mossy banks and by streams in mixed forest, north-facing slopes in pine forest, shrubberies, and meadows; 2700-3800 m.
