    Habit
    Annual; stems decumbent, spreading from a central root, up to 20 cm long but not rooting at the nodes, with many shortly ascending branches, becoming woody near the base.
    Leaves
    Leaves alternate, crowded on short internodes, elliptic to oblong,5–8.5 mm long, 0.8–1.5 mm wide, obtuse; axillary hairs in dense shaggy tufts as long as the internodes.
    Inflorescences
    Flowers in terminal clusters of up to 10, encircled by involucral leaves resembling the cauline leaves and enclosing a copious mass of woolly hairs almost as long as the flowers.

    Sepals broadly ovate, 2.8–4.2 mm long, rounded on the back, keeled and crested at the tip, upper margins broad and hyaline; petals 5, usually magenta or occasionally dark red, 2.5–3.5(–4.5) mm long, oblanceolate-oblong, rounded; stamens 4–12; stigma 3–5-branched.
    Fruits
    Capsule dehiscing in the middle, the lid 1.6–2 mm high, slightly broader than long; seeds 0.6–0.7 mm long, metallic silvery-grey, iridescent, the testa cells stellate, conical-tuberculate.
    Habitat
    Open short grassland on sandy soil, overgrazed areas and shallow soil over rock; 1050–1500 m
