Distribution

Canada (Quebec and Ontario west to Manitoba), U.S.A. (Maine, Vermont, New Hampshire, Massachusetts, New York, Connecticut, Michigan, Wisconsin, Illinois, Minnesota).

Ecology

In cold sphagnum, Larix (tamarack), Thuja (arborvitae and cedar) swamps and bogs, in damp coniferous forest and on wooded rocky slopes; sea level to 1000 m.

General Description

A terrestrial herb with one to several clustered stems to 32 cm tall, growing from a short rhizome with fibrous roots. Stems slender, terete, bearing three to four leaves in the apical half, pubescent, covered almost entirely by three to four tubular sheathes. Leaves suberect or ascending, narrowly elliptic-lanceolate, acute, 5-10 cm long, 1-3 cm wide, bluish green. Inflorescence one-flowered, 4-10 cm long; peduncle slender, wiry, densely shortly pubescent and glandular especially above; bract lanceolate, usually longer than the flower, 2-5 cm long. Flower with purple-green sepals and petals, the lip white heavily veined and mottled with purple except around the mouth; pedicel and ovary 0.8-1.5 cm long, densely shortly glandular pubescent. Dorsal sepal narrowly ovate, acuminate, 1.5-2.5 cm long, 0.5-1.1 cm wide, pubescent and ciliate; lateral sepals deflexed, linear-lanceolate, acute, 1.5-2 cm long, 0.20.4 cm wide, pubescent and ciliate. Petals porrect or deflexed, linear, acute, 1.3-2.2 cm long, 0.1-0.2 cm wide, ciliate. Lip obliquely conical, pointed, 1.5-2.5 cm long, 1-2 cm across, densely white pubescent on the incurved margin of mouth, pubescent on front surface. Column short; staminode concave, clawed, suborbicular, c.5 mm long, 4 mm wide.
