Distribution

Western U.S.A. (Washington, Oregon, California, Colorado, Montana, Idaho, Utah, Wyoming).

Ecology

Usually found in moist to dry, cool, open coniferous forest, less commonly in swampy ground and on rocky places under scrub in montane regions; 900-1400 m altitude.

General Description

A small terrestrial herb with a drooping habit, to 25 cm tall, with a slender short rhizome. Stems one to two, rather weak and arching, terete or grooved longitudinally, 5-15 cm long, 0.2-0.3 cm in diameter, densely reddish villose, emerging from two to three papery sheaths in the basal half. Leaves two, opposite at the apex of the stem, ovate-elliptic, obtuse or rounded, 5-10 cm long, 3.5-7 cm wide, often convex ant:! curved down to touch the ground, glabrous above and below, prominently three-veined. Inflorescence arcuate, distantly densely two- to four-flowered; peduncle weakly arcuate, villose, 2-15 cm long, bearing a sterile lanceolate bract along length; bracts lanceolate, acute, 1-3.5 cm long, glabrous. Flowers small, nutant, borne on a short crowded raceme, purplish brown to greenish, the lip yellow-green streaked and mottled with purple around the mouth; pedicel and ovary 1-1.8 cm long, shortly glandular-pubescent. Dorsal sepal lanceolate, acuminate, 1.5-2.6 cm long, 0.3-0.8 cm wide, arching over lip; synsepal similar but shortly acuminately bifid at the tip, 1.5-2.5 cm long, 0.4-0.9 cm wide. Petals lanceolate, acuminate, incuIVing, 1.5-2.5 cm long, 0.6-1.7 cm wide. Lip small, globose but slighdy dorsiventrally flattened, mouth small, 0.8-1.5 cm long, 0.5-0.9 cm across. Column short, 0.3 cm long; staminode whitish to pale yellow-green, elliptic-trulIiform, obtuse, much smaller than the stigma, 0.3 cm long, 0.2 cm wide.
