Biology

Flowering in June and July.

Distribution

Japan (Honshu, Yezo) , Sakhalin Island, E. Siberia, the Kamchatka Peninsula, the Kurile and Aleutian Islands, sw. Alaska to Kodiak Island.

Ecology

On grassy slopes, often in full sun, or under Betula (birch) trees; sea level to 1000 m. Flowering in June and July.

General Description

A terrestrial herb 20-35 cm tall, with a creeping rhizome. Stems erect, pubescent, tw'o-leaved. Leaves elliptic to elliptic- ovate, acute, 7-14 cm long, 3.5-8 cm wide, ciliate and hairy on veins, especially on underside ofleaves. Inflorescence one-flowered, glandular hairy especially towards apex; bract lanceolate or ovate, acute, 2.5-5 cm long. Flower pale yellowish green marked with brown spots on lip and inside of petals, the staminode white with a yellow mark; pedicel and ovary 1-1.5 cm long, glandular-pubescent. Dorsal sepal suberect, elliptic or oblong-elliptic, obtuse, 1.7-2.4 cm long, 1.3-1.8 cm wide. Synsepal narrowly elliptic, distinctly and acutely bifid, 1.1-1.6 cm long, 0.3-0.6 cm wide. Petals spreading, spathulate, rounded and concave at apex, 1.2-1.6 cm long, 0.4-0.6 cm wide. Lip deeply urceolate, 2.2-2.7 cm long. Staminode somewhat subquadrate, conduplicate, curved in side view, 0.4-0.6 cm long.
