    Habit
    Shrub or small tree (0.3–)1.5–10 m. tall; young branches glabrous or pubescent; older branches covered with greyish bark.
    Leaves
    Leaf-blades drying greyish green or greyish brown, chartaceous to coriaceous, narrowly oblanceolate to oblong-oblanceolate or elliptic to oblong-elliptic, 2.8–17.7(–20) cm. long, 0.8–8.1 cm. wide, acute to obtuse or occasionally rounded and usually with a long or short apiculum at apex, cuneate or occasionally obtuse at base, glabrous and dull to slightly shiny above, glabrous to finely pubescent beneath, lateral nerves not or scarcely impressed above, tertiary nerves usually ± apparent, seldom discolourous; petiole 0.1–1 cm. long, glabrous or pubescent; stipule-limbs truncate to triangular, (1.5–)2–3(–4) mm. long, glabrous or pubescent outside; lobe ± aristate, 0.5–3.5 mm. long, slightly keeled towards base.
    Inflorescences
    Corymbs (1.5–)3–11 cm. across, usually lax, sessile or rarely with a peduncle 0.5–1.5 cm. long; primary inflorescence-branches 0.2–2.8 cm. long, glabrous or pubescent; pedicels always present, with a few suppressed or rarely entirely suppressed, 0–10(–12) mm. long, glabrous or pubescent; inflorescence-supporting leaves absent or not markedly distinct from the foliage leaves; bracts stipule-like; bracteoles small, triangular to filiform, up to 1/4 the length of the calyx-tube, usually 1–2 present at the base of the calyx-tube.
    Calyx
    Calyx glabrous, puberulous or pubescent; tube 1–2 mm. long; limb (0.5–)0.75–1.25(–2) mm. long, repand to dentate or ± truncate with very short subulate lobes.
    Corolla
    Corolla white to pink; tube (3.2–)4–7.5(–8) cm. long, 1–2 mm. wide at top; lobes narrowly oblong to oblong, 6–9(–10) mm. long, 2–3 mm. wide, obtuse to acuminate.
    Fruits
    Fruit 0.9 cm. in diameter, often galled with the corolla-tube persistent.
    Seeds
    Seed rusty brown, 5 mm. wide.
    Habitat
    Usually in riverine forest or thickets, but also recorded from lowland wet evergreen forest and sea-shore; (2–50 m. Pemba and Zanzibar)240–1050 m.

    Stipule limbs (1.5)2–3(4) mm long, truncate to triangular, glabrous or pubescent outside; lobe ± aristate 0.5–3.5 mm long, slightly keeled towards the base.
