    Habit
    Annual ± glabrous herb 0.35–1.7 m. tall from a fibrous root; stems grooved, branched or ± simple.
    Leaves
    Leaf blades 2.6–8 cm. x 1.5–9(11) mm., linear to linear-lanceolate, acute at the apex, cuneate at the base, ± scabrid or glabrous above; stipule sheath 3–5 mm. long, with (3)5–7 setae 1–3 mm. long; petiole ± obsolete.
    Flowers
    Flowers in axillary clusters c. 6 mm. in diam., 3–4-merous; bracteoles composed of fascicles of short fimbriae present Calyx tube 1–1.5 mm. long, ellipsoid, glabrous; lobes very small, 0.25–0.3 mm. long, triangular, with ± ciliolate margins.
    Corolla
    Corolla rose-violet or white, sometimes with mauve lobes; tube 1.5–1.7 mm. long, funnel-shaped; lobes 1mm. long, ovate-triangular.
    Stamens
    Stamens with filaments exserted 0.4–0.8 mm.
    Pistil
    Style exserted 0.8–1.2 mm.; stigma subcapitate.
    Fruits
    Capsule 2–3 x 1 mm., oblong-ellipsoid, glabrous, crowned with the minute calyx teeth.

    Seeds (1.8)2–2.4 x (0.5)0.75–0.8 x 0.5–0.6 mm., narrowly oblong, rugulose-pitted, grooved ventrally, the groove widened at the base and with a white granular aril.
