This subspecies is accepted, and its native range is S. France to NW. Africa.

Flowering time depends on height of the location, but it ranges from March until the beginning of June in seasonally wet areas in meadows (in contrast to the more drought loving ssp. picta) from sea level up to about 1,500 m on alkaline or weakly acid subsoil.
