    Habit
    Herbs.
    Leaves
    Leaves opposite, equal, crenate, with conspicuous cystoliths.
    Flowers
    Flowers solitary or in 3-flowered cymules in narrow racemiform panicle; bracts often foliaceous at basal nodes, upwards bract-like persistent; bracteoles present, large.
    Calyx
    Calyx deeply divided into 5 subequal often recurved segments.
    Corolla
    Corolla outside with long curly glossy hairs all over; basal tube linear, long, widening into a short indistinct throat; limb distinctly 2-lipped, upper lip strongly falcate and laterally flattened, with 2 minute apical teeth, lower lip subcircular in outline, longitudinally plicate with 2 lateral parts folded over and ± covering central part, with 3 minute lobes, without conspicuous pattern of transverse differently coloured lines ('herring-bones').
    Stamens
    Stamens 2, attached just inside tube; filaments strongly flattened, strap-shaped, enclosed in upper lip; anthers bithecous, medifixed; thecae equal or one very slightly longer, held at same height and parallel, rounded.
    Style
    Style filiform, held between stamens; stigma with 2 erect ovoid rounded lobes.
    Fruits
    Capsule 4-seeded, clavate, with sterile basal stalk about equal in length to fertile part; retinaculae strong, curved.
    Seeds
    Seeds discoid, circular in outline, without raised rim, densely covered all over with retrorsely barbed glochidiae.
    Distribution
    A single species in Kenya and Mozambique.
