    Habit
    Perennial herb with a somewhat thickened rootstock, erect or ascending, (7–)10–85 cm. tall.
    Stem
    Stems terete, striate, with tuberculate-based setose hairs, branched below or not, sometimes very short and most of the height of the plant owing to the peduncle.
    Leaves
    Lower and middle stem leaves 3–4-pinnate, when 3-pinnate the final segments linear-oblong, ± 2–4 × 1–1.75 mm., when 4-pinnate with very small, linear, mucronate, ± 1–2 × 0.4–0.6 mm. segments; lamina narrowly deltoid-oblong in outline, ± 2.5–14 × 1.6–5 cm.; petiole 2–16 cm., it and the rhachis ± white-pilose; sheaths narrowly oblong, striate, with yellowish- or brownish-membranous, often ciliate margins, 1–2 cm.; white, bristly hairs present especially below the insertion of, and on the stalks of the pinnae, and on the ± recurved margins and midrib of the lower surface of the leaflets, rarely subglabrous; upper leaves somewhat shorter and more shortly petiolate or sessile.
    Inflorescences
    Umbels with often very long peduncles, 3–40 cm., densely deflexed-setose below the umbel, more sparsely so below, with 3–9 ± angular, usually shortly pilose rays 2–3(–7) mm. long; involucre of mostly ± 6–8 narrowly lanceolate, marginally setulose, ± 3–6 mm. bracts.
    Flowers
    Flowers ± (4–)6–9 to each partial umbel, all hermaphrodite or more commonly at least some inner ♂, on very short, ± glabrous pedicels up to ± 2 mm. long; involucel of 6–15, narrowly lanceolate to linear, marginally setulose bracteoles subequalling the flowers.
    Calyx
    Calyx-teeth distinct, deltoid-lanceolate.
    Corolla
    Petals ± 1 mm., blackish purple or rarely (not in East Africa) yellowish.
    Fruits
    Fruit oblong-ellipsoid, 4–6 mm., the spines of the secondary ribs pale to purplish; stylopodia conical; styles short, rigid, ± divergent, subequalling the stylopodia or shorter.
    Habitat
    A montane species, in grassland, moist pathsides, streamside, thickets, forest glades; 1520–3580 m.
