    Habit
    Tree 5–18 m. tall.
    Leaves
    Leaf-rhachis 0.4–1 m. long, ribbed, brown-pubescent or glabrous; petiole 20–50 cm. long, 7 mm. diameter; petiolules 0.7–1.5 cm. long; leaflets (2–)4–6-jugate, elliptic or oblong, 14–42(–46) cm. long, 6.5–17 cm. wide, shortly acuminate to caudate-acuminate at the apex, asymmetrically cuneate or, especially in the lower leaflets, truncate at the base, glabrous and shiny above, minutely pubescent or glabrous beneath; lateral veins in 15–25 pairs, prominent beneath.
    Inflorescences
    Inflorescences purplish, borne on the trunk at base or up to 50 cm. from ground, thyrsoid, (6–)10–15(–35) cm. long; buds purple; pedicels 2 mm. long.
    Calyx
    Calyx purple, 8–10 mm. long, 2-lipped, densely shortly velvety pubescent.
    Corolla
    Petals 4–6, obovate-spathulate or oblanceolate, 7.4–9.5 mm. long, including a 1.2 mm. claw, 3 mm. wide, scale 5 mm. long, emarginate, sometimes with a bifid appendage arising just below the apex.
    Disc
    Disk asymmetric, glabrous.
    Stamens
    Stamens 7–10, the basal 2/3 of the filaments hairy; anthers glabrous.
    Ovary
    Ovary 5–6-lobed, 5–6-locular, bristly with purple hairs; rudimentary ovary absent.
    Fruits
    Fruit ± star-shaped, pyriform in outline, 7–13.3 cm. wide, 4–6-lobed or winged, densely rough brown or purple spreading hairy.
    Seeds
    Seeds brown, subovate in outline, very compressed, 1.9–3.2 cm. long, 1.1–1.8 cm. wide, 6 mm. thick.
    Habitat
    Evergreen forest, sometimes on periodically inundated grey clay loams; 1100–1300 m.
