- Habit
- Erect annual herb 4–28 cm high, usually with several stems from the base, simple or sparingly branched, fleshy
- Leaves
- Lower leaves ovate-lanceolate, 8–30 mm long, 2–5 mm wide, sessile, apex obtuse, margins entire, with a strong marginal vein; cauline leaves ovate, decreasing in size and becoming scale-like bracts above, glabrous
- Flowers
- Flowers solitary in axils, the lower flowers sessile and cleistogamous, upper flowers pedicellate and perfect; pedicels 6–9 mm long, filiform
- Calyx
- Calyx ± 2 mm long, teeth 1 mm long, glabrous
- Corolla
- Corolla purplish-blue or white, corolla tube campanulate, ± 3 mm long, limb 4–6 mm in diameter
- Fruits
- Capsule globose, 2–3 mm in diameter, with remains of the persistent style
