    Small tree or shrub to 6 m; stems terete, tomentose to glabrous, hairs simple, stellate and subsessile-glandular; older stems becoming corky, pale brown

    Leaves suborbicular, rarely shallowly 3-lobed, 12–24 × 10–21 cm, shortly acuminate, margin distinctly crenate-serrate, base deeply cordate, rarely crenulate-denticulate, upper surface scabridulous, lower surface tomentose to minutely puberulous; petiole 5–17 cm long; stipules oblong in basal half, acuminate in upper half, 0.3–0.7 cm long, 0.1–0.3 cm wide, sparsely pubescent, caducous

    Inflorescences 2–4, borne on condensed (rarely to 20 cm long), leafless specialized short shoots arising from the axils usually of fallen leaves, 4–19 cm long; peduncle 1.6–9.5 cm long; bracts 0.1–0.3 cm long, 0.03–0.1 cm wide, pubescent, caducous; branches forking 3–4 times; bracteoles not seen; pedicels 0.5–1.8 cm long, tomentose to glabrous; epicalyx bracts inserted on pedicels, linear-lanceolate 0.1–0.2 cm long, caducous
