Morphology General Habit
Deep glaucous green, dwarf, decumbent annual herb, up to 15 cm but often much less

Stem rigid, wiry, subterete, more sharply ridged or quadrangular above, branched from the base (or above only in smaller plants), branches decumbent, further branched below, and with axillary umbels above

Ecology
Barren desert land, often on sandy soils, sometimes on semi-saline soils, dry-farmed fields, gardens etc.; alt. 25–150 m
Phenology
Flowering and fruiting: Mar.–Apr.
Distribution
Quite common in the E & SE sectors of the desert region of Iraq, rare in the steppe region. Mediterranean Europe (to Greece), Crete, Aegean Isles, Cyprus, Syria, Palestine, Egypt, Arabia, Kuwait, Bahrain, Turkey, Azerbaijan, N & W Iran, Turkmenistan.
Note
The above description refers to the var. glaucum (Robill. et Cast.) Wolff, to which the Iraq material is referable. The var. semicompositum is a larger plant with longer branches, the lower leaves distinctly petiolate, ± spatulate and obtuse, and bracteoles with margins usually entire.
