    Climber to 7 m or shrub 1–2 m tall; branchlets slender, obtusely tetragonous, greyish, puberulent and brown or purplish when very young

    Leaves 6–18 × 3–10 cm, elliptic or ovate-elliptic, acuminate at the apex, rounded or shortly cuneate at the base, entire, subchartaceous or membranous, dark green above, lighter beneath, usually blackish on drying, glabrous on both faces or slightly puberulous on the nervation beneath; petiole 0.8–3.5 cm long, slender, puberulous

    Cymes few-flowered, lax, axillary in the uppermost leaves or subtended by bracts, all forming a terminal, foliate, corymbose inflorescence, 5–9 cm long and 4–8.5 cm wide; pedicels of dichotomies up to 2.8 cm long

    Calyx white at anthesis, turning yellow, pink or violet-red, 1.4–3 cm long, ± pentagonous and inflated; lobes 8–10 mm long, broadly ovate, apiculate or shortly acuminate, connivent at the apex, ± completely concealing the corolla tube

    Corolla red, scarlet or crimson, sometimes deep rose; tube c. 2.5 cm long, slender, glandular-pubescent; lobes 6–10 × 3.5–4 mm
