Habit
Reed-like rhizomatous perennial; culms robust, 1–4 m. high, firm, erect.
Leaves
Leaf-blades 8–60 cm. long or more, 2–25 mm. wide, stiff, glaucous; ligule a line of hairs; sheaths glabrous or hispid.
Inflorescences
Inflorescence ovate to narrowly lanceolate with the racemes overlapping, or linear with the racemes ± distant, 8–40 cm. long, their rhachis glabrous or pilose; racemes simple or compound, 3–20 cm. long, straight, ascending, coarsely spiculate.
Spikelets
Spikelets narrowly ovate to broadly elliptic, plump, 2.5–3.5(–4) mm. long, glabrous to hispid; lower lemma acute to acuminate, rarely with a subulate awn-point up to 3 mm. long; upper lemma 2–3 mm. long.
Habitat
Swamps and riversides, usually standing in water; 0–2400 m.

Florets
Basal sterile florets male; with palea. Lemma of lower sterile floret similar to upper glume; ovate; 1 length of spikelet; membranous; 5-7 -veined; glabrous, or hispidulous; acute, or acuminate; muticous, or awned (rarely). Awn of lower sterile floret 0-3 mm long. Fertile lemma ovate; gibbous; 2-3 mm long; indurate; much thinner above; shiny; without keel; 5 -veined. Lemma margins involute. Lemma apex acute; laterally pinched. Palea reflexed at apex; indurate.
