    Habit
    Rhizomatous suffrutex 0.3-0.4(-2) m. tall; branchlets pilose with long hairs 2-3 mm. long.

    Leaves obovate, 2.5-10.5 cm. long, 1.5-6.5 cm. wide, cuspidate or shortly obtusely acuminate at the apex, rounded to subcordate at the base, pilose and ciliate with long hairs 2-3 mm. long; lateral nerves in 5-6 pairs, prominent beneath; tertiary nerves and veins often red, closely reticulate, not so prominent but darker than surface beneath; petiole ± 5 mm. long often together with lower 2/3 of midrib on both surfaces bright red in life.

    Male flowers in 1-3-flowered cymules; peduncle up to 1 cm. long; pedicels 0.4-1 cm. long, with ± sessile small round glands; calyx with ± sessile small round glands and some short hairs; calyx-tube 1.2 mm. long; calyx-lobes 5, triangular, 2 mm. long, 1.5 mm. wide, with ciliate pale edges; corolla-bud broadly conic; corolla-tube 0.3 mm. long; corolla-lobes 5, rounded ovate, 2 mm. long and wide, rounded at apex, shortly ciliate on pale margins; anthers 10, ± sessile, ± 1.1 mm. long, with long bristle-like hairs overtopping tips; filaments 0.3 mm. long or less; rudimentary ovary broadly conic, 0.5 mm. long; stigmas 5, 1.5 mm. long, joined for 1/3, hairy inside. Female flowers solitary or in 2-flowered cymules, 5-merous; pedicels 0.8-1.2 cm. long; bracts linear, 2 mm. long; calyx 2 mm. long; calyx-lobes triangular, 1.5 mm. long, tomentellous inside, glabrous outside except for a few minute glandular hairs; margins densely ciliolate; corolla dark with pale margin in dry state, 3.5 mm. long, glabrous save for a few minute hairs; corolla-lobes ± rounded-oblong, 2-3 mm. long, 2.3 mm. wide.
