    Habit
    Perennial herbs or (on Madagascar) shrubs.
    Leaves
    Leaves opposite or in whorls of 4.
    Flowers
    Flowers single, sessile, in dense or lax sessile or pedunculate racemiform cymes; bracts small or large and foliaceous, lower sterile; bracteoles 2, linear to lanceolate, acuminate.
    Calyx
    Calyx glumaceous, divided to the base in 5 1-toothed sepals which are thickened and horny at base, dorsal slightly longer and wider than the rest.
    Corolla
    Corolla glabrous on the outside (hairy in Madagascar); tube linear, widened above stamens; limb subequally 5-lobed, 2 upper lobes erect and slightly narrower, 3 lower spreading.
    Stamens
    Stamens 4, inserted in tube, subsessile; anthers 1-thecous, included, curved, oblong with apiculate tip, finely bearded.
    Ovary
    Ovary with 2 ovules per locule, glabrous; style glabrous or sparsely hairy; stigma with 2 broad subequal lobes or the upper larger.
    Fruits
    Capsule 2–4-seeded, oblong-ellipsoid to triangular in outline, beaked, glumaceous, glabrous and shiny.
    Seeds
    Seed discoid, tuberculate.
    Distribution
    Range: About 50 species from southern USA to Argentina and Chile, 10 species in tropical Africa and 10 species in Madagascar.
