    Habit
    Plants 30–60 cm high.
    Corms
    Corms 15–20 mm in diameter; tunics pale straw-coloured, fibrous with fibres reticulate or mostly vertical and then often thickened and claw-like below.
    Leaves
    Foliage leaves of the flowering stem 4–6, almost entirely sheathing, or the lower leaves laminate with blades 3–8 cm long, occasionally to 30 cm long and then reaching the top of the spike, linear (lanceolate), imbricate, margins and midribs hyaline and slightly thickened, upper leaves always predominantly sheathing; hysteranthus foliage leaves on separate shoots are not known and are probably not produced; leaves of non-flowering plants not known.
    Stem
    Stem erect, unbranched, usually slightly flexed above the sheath of the upper leaf.
    Inflorescences
    Spike 4–8(12)-flowered; bracts green becoming dry above, 10–14 mm long, the inner somewhat shorter than to nearly as long as the outer.
    Flowers
    Flowers dull- to bright-yellow, the uppermost tepal and the limbs of the 2 lower lateral tepals sometimes brown, or the lower lateral tepals deeper yellow; perianth tube 7–8 mm long, curving outward between the bracts, widening near the mouth; tepals unequal, the uppermost c. 13 × 7–10 mm, larger than the others and arching over the stamens, the upper lateral tepals smaller c. 12 mm long and directed forward and curving upward apically, the 3 lower tepals c. 10 mm long, usually exceeding the uppermost when viewed in profile, united for 3 mm, down-curved, narrowed below into claws, the limbs channelled c. 3 mm at the widest.
    Stamens
    Filaments c. 8 mm long, exserted 3–4 mm; anthers c. 6 mm long.
    Style
    Style dividing near the anther apices, style branches c. 2.5 mm long.
    Fruits
    Capsules 12–15 mm long, ellipsoid.
