    Habit
    Tree to 10 m with rough fibrous bark throughout.
    Leaves
    Juvenile leaves usually alternate, sometimes peltate, ovate or round, bristly; adult strongly discolorous, alternate, rarely opposite, broadly lanceolate to ovate, 7.5–15 cm long, 3–5 cm wide, without conspicuous oil glands; petiole flattened or channelled, 1–2 cm long.
    Inflorescences
    Umbels 3–7-flowered, usually in terminal panicles; peduncle angular, 1.5–2.5 cm long; pedicels 1.5–2.5 cm long.
    Flowers
    Flowers crimson, orange or pink, but white varieties occur in cultivation; buds clavate or obovoid; operculum depressed hemispherical-conical, 2–3 mm long, 6–7 mm wide.
    Calyx
    Calyx-tube 8–10 mm long, 6–7 mm wide.
    Fruits
    Fruits ovoid, subglobose or urceolate, usually contracted at the mouth, 2–3.5 cm long, 2–3 cm wide.
    Seeds
    Seeds brownish with terminal wing.

    Habit
    Small tree up to 9 m. tall.
    Bark
    Bark rough and persistent throughout.
    Leaves
    Leaves up to 11 x 4 cm., broadly lanceolate or ovate-lanceolate.
    Pedicel
    Pedicels 2–3 cm. long.
    Inflorescences
    Umbels c. 5-flowered; buds 1·5–2 cm. long, clavate to pyriform; operculum hemispherical, 2–3 times shorter than the receptacle-tube.
    Filaments
    Filaments scarlet or flame-coloured.
    Fruits
    Fruit 2–3·5 x 2–3 cm., urceolate, very thick and hard, very large; valves deeply enclosed.
